- Most people have no idea who Beryl Markham is, which I found odd considering what she achieved, her bizarre personal like, and her personality in general. Whether or not she actually wrote it has been a subject of debate for years, but it would be almost impossible for anyone else to recount her exploits in such detail. This book gives you Beryl's perspective, leaving out the juicy details of her life after her incredible West-to-East flight. And they're at least as interesting. Still, the book is superbly written. After you read it, pick up Straight on Till Morning The Life of Beryl Markham by Mary Lovell. Excellent book that provides the resto of the story.

- Mary Lovell has written a terrific story of this incredible multi-faceted Beryl Markham. I loved West with the Night - perhaps because it was recommended to me by dear friend who had an auntographed copy from Beryl who met her at Santa Barbara's Coral Casino in 1944; Although I didn't meet her I too was living in Santa Barbara from '52 until 1969 and am quite familiar with and amazed at much of the Beryl's history- I too knew the people and places - during her stay in Santa Barbara.- so close and yet so far- ( I had no idea of the drama in her life at that time.) Particularly the rumor or suspicion that she had not written WWTN.- because of her (suspected) illiteracy that her third husband had done so.
The author Lovell's exhaustive research puts this controversy to rest in my mind. She reveals more than expected or dreamed of regarding her much admired, subject -a fearless pilot, animal lover, horse trainer- a tall beautiful woman , promiscuous, exotic, rude, hated by some- loved by many- a beloved personality .It is an unexpected thrill for the biographer and Beryl to finally meet in Kenya in 1986. The book was written in 1987. - The movie "Out of Africa" barely alluded to Markham (the Felicity character in the movie), and BM's autobiography is only part of the story. This is a well researched book and greatly enlarges one's understanding of Markham. She was a daring and extremely skilled pilot in an undeveloped region (Africa), and a fascinating person. Pilots will especially like the portions on her aviation career in Africa.
- Another interesting record of women in aviation, the African colonial period and the people made household names in Out of Africa. One take away from this is that Beryl Markham's name should be much more well-known than Amelia Earnhardt's. Beryl was a much better aviator and, seems to me, Amelia is famous more from her mysterious disappearance than from being a record breaking, knowledgeable pilot. This book is more historically accurate, but West With the Night, Markham's autobiography, is a really fun read.
- Ever since watching "Out of Africa" years ago, I've been fascinated with women who pioneered their way in Africa back when it was extraordinarily challenging to be a white woman there, especially one on her own. -Similar to Isak Dinesen, Beryl Markham blazed her own trail. -Certainly a flawed being, but tremendously interesting. And the writing is excellent.
- I read this after finishing Beryl Markham's autobiography "West with the Night". That book was an amazingly lyrical, beautiful memoir. This biography by Mary Lovell fleshes out the details of this remarkable woman's life. Lovell was able to spend time with Beryl Markham for several weeks near the end of her life. She was also granted access to all of Markham's papers, and conducted numerous, in depth interviews with many people from her life, both friends and "enemies." Markham was essentially a beautiful, amoral, driven individual who was able to create a life of amazing adventure and accomplishment by trading on her beauty, charm and niavete. Her friends were committed to her, her enemies hated her, and the lines between the two were often fluid. Her love affairs were numerous and passionate. The book is a fascinating, detailed, engrossing exploration of Markham's entire life triumphs, tragedies, joys, heartbreaks.
