"The Mysteries of London, of which this is the third volume, is one of the most important adventures of the popular 19th century adventurer, rogue, and avenger Rocambole created by Ponson du Terraill, a minor French aristocrat whose popular tales of the roguish Rocambole (in Europe the name refers to a type of adventure story the character inspired), one of the most important characters in the French feuillitons (serials) that featured Dumas, Hugo, Eugene Sue, Paul Feval and others.

Rocambole began as a young Dickensian henchman of the series villain Sir Williams, but over the years matured, and became more of an avenger of crime than rogue. This novel comes late in the career of the character following his time as a convict and a disfiguring accident. The novel finds him in England and is one of the great adventures of his career.

A few Rocambole novels, and two plays about the character have been translated into English finally. In Europe and Mexico Rocambole has featured in films, television, comic books, and other media as one of the great creations of his time."
