Remnant eBook Randi Darren Reviews

  • The book was okay I guess. Definitely not the best by this author. Where it started with promise it quickly became repetitive. Work the farm, bang a chick, kill one or two people and then bang another chick. Rinse and repeat. I honestly skipped like every single sex scene and realized it was like 60% of the entire book. There was very little plot. Any hint of plot progression ended with the mc banging another chick. I found that boring. The violence, and political tensions in the book was well written but at the same time there was precious little of it. The main character was not flushed out at all. The reason is because he lost his memory ( which I'm okay with) but it's never explained why. Or how he got his abilities. Or why people have status screens. Nothing interesting in the least. I doubt I pick up the next one unless I'm bored, I guess.
  • First a disclaimer, I own all the books by Arand /Darren and I have read them all except for Cultivating Chaos.
I like their style with or without the graphic sex. I will try not to give any spoilers.
The first book is usually the hardest to get through at the start. The style starts with the MC not fully formed sometimes even a total zero. The author patiently builds up in detail the MC and the universe involved. Weaknesses and strengths evolve and secondary characters appear and develop.
As the characters develop the action picks up but now the backstory and details are set.
This story is well written, an MC who basically starts from scratch and gradually rises in power. He of course develops a harem somewhat grudgingly. There are beastkins and the status of humans and the sexes is surprising.
There are a lot of emotions and emotional conflicts by the characters. There is personal loss suffered by the MC and secondary characters.
The ending leaves you wanting more because you get invested in the story. The ending is satisfying not a cliffhanger but there are things left unsettled and there is a sense of foreboding.
Can't wait for the next couple of books. It is months away though. Only consolation though is I re-read the previous volume of any of the authors' books whenever a new volume appears.
So be patient when you start this, the pace will pick up and it is a great read.
Enjoy and remember Randi usually doesn't fade to black.
  • I couldn't put it down!
My initial thought was Stardew Valley (or any other similar farming RPG) meets Overboard. Someone with enchanted tools on a farm with hints of memories but nothing specific, "I know this, but I don't know why." Mix that up with Randi Darren's amazing writing style and you've got the beginning of the story.

    But it gets better!

We find that Past Steve sold his memories to give Current Steve a headstart in the world. But why? While this leads to some hilarious situations (and cursing of Past Steve), we end up getting some pretty good insight as to why he would have sold off his memories.

The land of Lamals is different than Steve suspects and worse than any of his expectations could prepare him for. He gets many strange looks from his women because of his lack of knowledge about the land and customs and this is a critical piece of the story because Steve views the world as many of the readers might, so the women are not only telling Steve, but informing us readers at the same time.

Mystery, intrigue, humor, excitement, sadness, animal girls, a touch of racism, and well written and well spaced sexy times makes for one of the best reads I've had in 2019.

I'd pre-order book two right now if I could. Hurry up and take my money!!
  • This was an odd book in some ways, yet very common in others. First there is a minor spoiler, but no real information.

Arand has once again chosen to kill off characters you should care about for no particular reason. It does nothing to add to the story, the characters in the story appear to blow it off right away so it doesn't impact them, it's only there to make the novel darker. Pointless and depressing.

Why two stars? I usually like Arand, but like so many novels lately the MC is a beta male. Arand doesn't try to hide this as there are many comments about the women training the MC. The MC is basically a caveman in mentality and does whatever the women tell him to do. If that's your thing, then the novel may get another star, but the lack of any real story won't get you much more.
  • I'm a huge William D. Arand fan, but this book was a miss for me. Felt pretty dry and didn't hold my interest in the slightest. I couldn't care less about the characters and the world wasn't all that interesting.
  • I love seeing more stories in the Arand universe. This story follows Steve after he wakes up in a field with no memories of his past. He uses the tools given to him to build a home for himself and the women with him.

As the info about the book says, Steve has no moral sense due to his missing memories and doesn't care what most people think about him. The women that are with Steve help to guide him so he can deal with people correctly.

There are a lot of questions presented regarding the world that this story resides in. They are never answered but they are talked about a little. I hope in the future Arand will reveal more about the world and Steve's past so some of the concepts make more sense.

I look forward to the next one.
